How to Install Transmission Fluid

Installing transmission fluid is one of the basic maintenance procedures that is occasionally necessary for your automobile. Like other fluids such as power steering fluid, brake fluid and motor oil, transmission fluid levels can become low through normal use of your automobile. It is important to check the levels occasionally and keep your transmission fluid at the proper level to ensure that you do not damage your powertrain. Installing this fluid is a simple process that nearly anyone can complete.

Things You'll Need

  • Owner's manual
  • Transmission fluid
  • Funnel
  • Shop rag
  • Find the section in your owner's manual that shows where your power steering dipstick tube is located. This is used to check the level of your transmission fluid, and is also the spot where you will add more fluid. Also listed in your manual will be the recommended transmission fluid for your vehicle. This might also be listed under the hood of your automobile near the transmission fluid dipstick.

  • Park your car somewhere on level ground and leave the engine running for about 2 minutes so that your fluids have a chance to warm up and circulate properly.

  • Pull out the dipstick from the dipstick tube and wipe it clean with a shop rag. There will be a high mark on the stick labeled "Full" and another mark below that labeled "Add." Place the clean dipstick completely back into the tube. Remove the stick from the tube and see where the transmission fluid level is marked on the dipstick. If it is below the "Full" mark, it's time to install fluid.

  • Insert the funnel into the dipstick tube and add small amounts of transmission fluid.

  • Reinsert the dipstick and check the transmission fluid level again. If it still reads low, repeat the process until you have the proper amount of transmission fluid installed.

  • Replace the dipstick into the tube and seal it completely once your transmission fluid is at the proper level.

  • Close the hood and shut off your automobile.
