How to Disable the Seat Beat Warning Alarm

Most new cars have seat belt alarms that chime whenever the key is in the ignition and the driver's seat belt is not in use. These alarms can be annoying in many situations that do not call for a seat belt, such as when waiting for the tank to fill at a gas station. Disconnecting the alarm is a simple process but not necessarily a recommended one. Driving without a seat belt is illegal in most places and can lead to serious injury. Do not neglect to wear a seat belt just because there is no alarm reminding you to wear one.

  • Insert your key in the ignition and turn it. Turn the car on, so that the radio plays and the air conditioning activates. Do not turn the ignition all the way to the right, so that the engine starts.

  • Press the knob on the dashboard's instrument cluster until the odometer reads "ODO." Turn the key until your car is off.

  • Turn the ignition on and hold the knob. Hold the knob for about 15 seconds and put on your seat belt. Continue holding the knob while you put your seat belt on.

  • Release the knob. The instrument cluster should read "B off."
