How to Improve a Hyundai Accent's Gas Mileage

Hyundai introduced the Accent compact car in the U.S. in 1995. Gas mileage from 1995-2009 typically reached about 35 mpg for highway driving. In 2008 the mileage formula changed and ratings dropped a few miles per gallon, but remained at a high level. A few steps can increase fuel economy on your Hyundai Accent.

  • Maintain your car. Get regular oil changes; Hyundai manuals recommend every 3,000 miles or three months, whichever occurs first. Use regular octane gasoline. Using a higher octane is not cost-effective and offers no benefits for the Accent. Keep tires properly inflated and aligned for an increase in fuel efficiency of up to 3 percent. Change the air filter on a regular basis as a clean filter can increase mileage by up to 10 percent.

  • Drive on the highway as much as possible and choose routes with the fewest stoplights and least traffic. The Accent can get up to 29 mpg in city driving, but 35 mpg or more in highway driving. Drive at the speed limit as speeds of more than 60 mph decreases gas mileage. Avoid idling the engine.

  • Use the Accent's cruise-control feature, which limits rapid increases and decreases in speed that can affect gas mileage.

  • Empty your car of any unnecessary weight. Extra pounds reduce fuel efficiency up to 2 percent. Items on top of your car can cause wind resistance, which can lower your miles per gallon by up to 10 percent.

  • Ignore products that make claims to save you gas. The EPA has performed tests on many of these products to find that they offer little to no improvement and can damage your car.
