How to Reset a Nissan Pathfinder SES Light

The SES, or Service Engine Soon, light in a Nissan Pathfinder is on the instrument gauge panel. The light comes on when the car finds a problem within the engine. You cannot deactivate the light by simply disconnecting and reconnecting the battery -- you must reset it with a scan tool that connects to the Pathfinder and communicates with its onboard diagnostics system. You can reset the light in seconds using the scan tool.

Things You'll Need

  • Automotive scan tool
  • Put the Pathfinder in park and place the key in the ignition. Turn the key to the "On" position but do not crank the car.

  • Locate the communication port for the Pathfinder. It is underneath the driver's-side dashboard and will be covered by a plastic plate that simply pulls off.

  • Connect the scan tool to the port on the Pathfinder.

  • Turn on the automotive scanning tool and select "ECM," "Codes," "clear all codes." Some scan tools may use other, but similar commands -- refer to the manual that came with the tool.

  • Unplug the automotive scan tool and crank your engine. Wait a few seconds and then check that the SES light has indeed turned off.
