A vehicle's fuel injector sprays a mixture of fuel and air into the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine. It has been the most common fuel delivery system in vehicles since the mid-1980s.
Most fuel injectors are at the head of the engine, at the intake manifold near the intake valve. The intake manifold is usually in the middle of the car, close to the dashboard.
Fuel injectors in diesel vehicles may be located in a number of places. Since the injector works differently -- by injecting fuel directly into the cylinder instead of the carburetor -- diesel engines have fuel injectors in different places.
Continuous fuel injectors provide a constant spray of fuel from the injector in front of the intake valve. This means the intake valve controls how the fuel enters the cylinder.
Electronic fuel injectors are controlled by computers. The electronic control unit uses information from a number of sensors to provide the optimal fuel-to-air mix for your vehicle's needs at any given time.
