Things You'll Need

  • 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix Repair Guide
  • Jumper Cables
  • Spark Tester

Engine Will Not Crank

  • Jump start the vehicle and allow the engine to run for several minutes in an attempt to recharge the battery, as it is likely dead.

  • Remove the jumper cables from both vehicles, and shut down the engine on the Grand Prix.

  • Attempt to start the Grand Prix without the jumping it. If it is able to be jump started, but fails to start after shutting down the engine, the battery is most likely defective and needs to be replaced.

Engine Cranks But Will Not Start

  • Check the fuel level. The most common reason that the engine will crank, but not start, is because the Grand Prix is out of gas.

  • Test the spark plugs using a spark tester if you find that the gas tank has enough fuel but the engine still will not crank.

  • Turn the key to the "On" position but do not attempt to crank the engine. Listen for the fuel pump to power up and begin to build pressure. If you are unable to hear this when turning the vehicle on, the fuel pump may be bad.
