The 2005 Chevrolet Colorado is equipped with an oil-change sensor that alerts owners when it's time to change the truck's oil. Instead of basing oil-change intervals on mileage, the sensor counts engine revolutions. Once the engine completes the required number of revolutions, the oil-change light comes on to alert you. Once the light comes on, replace the oil within 500 miles of driving. You must reset the oil-change indicator after each oil change in order for the indicator to be accurate.
Start the truck and let the engine run for approximately five minutes to warm up the oil. This will make the oil drain better.
Place the container underneath the oil pan drain plug. Turn the plug counterclockwise to loosen it and continue turning the plug by hand. Once the plug is ready to be removed, quickly pull it out and move your hand. The oil will begin to flow out. Once the oil stops draining, replace the plug and tighten it.
Place the oil filter wrench over the oil filter and turn it counterclockwise to loosen it. You'll find the oil filter protruding down from the engine, on the passenger's side, just behind the front sway bar. Once the filter is loose, continue removing it by hand. Dump the oil inside the filter into the container.
Lubricate the new oil filter's gasket using some of the old oil. Screw the filter back onto the truck by hand. Once hand tight, apply the wrench and tighten the filter just a little more. Do not over-tighten the filter, to prevent crushing the gasket.
Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap. It is located in the middle of the engine, just forward of the air cleaner. Insert the funnel into the oil filler and add oil (5.5 qts. for 3.5L engine, 4.5 qts. for 2.8L engine).
Start the truck and let it run for approximately five minutes and then turn it off.
Remove the oil dipstick, clean it off and replace it into the tube. The dipstick is located on the driver's side, just behind the battery. Remove the dipstick again and check the oil level. If the level reaches the "Full" mark, replace the dipstick and close the hood. If the oil level is low, add an additional .5 qts. of oil and re-check. Once full, replace the filler cap and close the hood.
Turn the ignition to the "On" position, but do not start the truck.
Scroll through the Driver Information Computer options by repeatedly pressing the trip odometer reset button. Stop when you see "Oil Light" displayed. Press and hold the reset button until you hear a series of beeps. Turn off the ignition.
