How to Connect Spark Plug Wires to a Distributor Cap

The spark plug wires on your vehicle are an important part of the ignition system and are responsible for delivering spark from the distributor to the spark plugs, which are located in the engine's cylinders. Installing spark plug wires on a distributor is generally a straightforward process that can be accomplished by an amateur mechanic.

Things You'll Need

  • Work shop manual for your car
  • Locate the distributor. This will vary depending on the make and model of car. Some cars have distributors that are located on the side of the engine and on others the distributor is located on one end or the other. Consult the workshop manual for your vehicle if you cannot locate the distributor visually.

  • Determine what the firing order of your engine is. This information can be found in the workshop manual and possibly the owner's manual and will vary from model to model. The correct firing order for the motor must be determined if the distributor does not already have spark plug wires in the correct order.

  • Remove the spark plug wires by pulling them straight off of the distributor. Pull from the base of the spark plug where there is a thicker boot section to avoid damaging the plug wire as you remove it. Grasp the wire firmly when you pull it off. If possible, replace the plug wires one at a time to avoid mixing up the firing order of the engine. Remove the wire from the spark plug by pulling it off of the plug in the same manner that was used to remove the plug from the distributor.

  • Install the spark plug wire by pressing the end of it firmly down on the connector that is located on the distributor. You will feel the plug wire seat onto the connector. Tug gently on it to make sure that it is fastened securely to the distributor. Repeat this process for the remaining plug wires.
