2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Mechanical Problems

According to Automotive.com, the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee was ranked above average in consumer polls for overall value. There were, however, some common mechanical problems reported with the vehicle which resulted in recalls. Below are the most common reasons for recalls on this model.

Fuel Injection System

  • The most commonly reported problem with the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee was with the fuel injection system. Due to a design flaw on the intake and exhaust manifolds, excessive amounts of debris would enter the engine and clog the #3 cylinder. This could result in poor engine performance as well as potentially causing an engine fire. The recall was issued on April 8, 2002 and affected 1,115,322 units.

Cooling Fan

  • The second most common mechanical failure was with the cooling fan. The plastic blades of the electric fan would break off, piercing the shroud and causing engine damage. This recall was issued June 8, 2006. 189,479 units were affected.

Exterior Headlamp

  • On March 13, 2006, a total of 292,000 units were recalled for violating Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard NO. 108. This requires that all exterior headlamp accessories be equipped with an amber side reflector. Vehicles without these reflectors are not sufficiently visible to other drivers and thus increase the likelihood of a collision.

Heated Seats

  • There were 103,409 units recalled on April 9, 2009 due to a failure in the design of the unit used in heated seats. The units would overheat and catch fire, resulting in injury or damage to the vehicle.
