How to Improve the Gas Mileage of a V6 Mustang

Although the Ford Mustang is known more for its sharp design and engine power than being fuel efficient, you can improve its mileage with sensible driving habits and proper maintenance. A Mustang with a V6 engine already gets better mileage than a Mustang with a V8, but new and improved auto parts can also drastically improve the gas mileage of a V6.

Things You'll Need

  • Engine oil
  • Exhaust system
  • Air filter
  • Ignition system
  • Tires
  • GPS system
  • Change the oil every 3,000 miles. Old oil or not enough oil decreases the efficiency of an engine. When an engine is not running at maximum efficiency, it gets less gas mileage.

  • Upgrade the exhaust system on your V6 Mustang. Many Mustangs equipped with a V6 come with a single exhaust pipe. By adding a dual exhaust system, the exhaust flow will be better and gas mileage will increase. Upgraded exhaust systems also have wider and straighter pipes. These also improve exhaust flow.

  • Install an upgraded air filter in your V6 Mustang. An engine requires oxygen to run and old air filters tend to become clogged quicker than the new and improved ones. The new ones cost about twice as much, but they also become clogged less quickly and last much longer. An improved air filter improves gas mileage.

  • Remove any installed items that are designed to make your V6 Mustang go faster. These items include throttle body spacers and turbo kits.

  • Install an aftermarket electrical ignition system. Older Mustangs came with systems that were not as efficient as newer systems. A quality upgraded electrical ignition system improves the efficiency of the engine, thus increasing gas mileage.

  • Buy new tires that increase gas mileage. Tires with radial designs reduce rolling resistance. The less resistance, the more your mileage will improve.

  • Improve your driving habits. Obey the speed limit and don't rev the engine of your Mustang. Avoid sudden starts and stops. Accelerate before you get to a hill, as opposed to when you go up it. Combine your errands so you drive less. Use a GPS system so you don't get lost.

  • Use your air conditioning only when necessary.

  • Lower the wind resistance on your Mustang. Close the windows when driving on the highway.
