There are three different engines available on the 2000 Dodge Durango. While all three feature eight cylinders, the 5.2-liter and 5.9-liter engines employ the same PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve. The 4.7-liter engine features a different-style valve. The PCV valve allows unburned gases built up from minute explosions in the combustible engine to recirculate back into the engine to help prevent the gases from sludging up the engine oil in the crankcase. Replace the valve as part of the recommended maintenance service schedule for the Durango.
Open the hood to the Durango and locate the PCV valve on the engine valve cover.
Pull up on the PCV valve to release it from the rubber grommet on the engine valve cover.
Gently twist the end of the PCV valve from the connected hose to remove it from the hose.
Insert the hose connection of the replacement PCV valve first, then replug the valve into the rubber grommet on the engine valve cover.
Open the hood to the Durango and locate the PCV valve on the oil fill tube just below the cap.
Disconnect the hose end of the valve first by gently twisting it and then pulling it off of the valve.
Twist the PCV valve counterclockwise to align the retaining tabs on the cams of the oil fill tube, then pull the valve out of the tube.
Align the tabs of the new valve to the cams of the tube and insert it into the tube. Twist it clockwise to secure into place.
Reattach the hose connection to the other end of the valve.
