How to Replace the Glass in a Side View Mirror

When the glass of an automobile's side mirror becomes cracked or damaged, it may need to be replaced. Replacing the glass in a side mirror is not a difficult task. Replacement glass panes can be purchased from automobile supply stores. In as little as a half hour, you can replace your damaged glass.

Things You'll Need

  • Black rubber sealant
  • New pane of side mirror glass
  • Masking or duct tape
  • Remove broken pieces of glass from the mirror you are replacing. Wear gloves and eye protection.

  • Clean the plastic mirror base with glass cleaner and allow it to dry.

  • Remove the plastic from the adhesive strips on the back of the new mirror.

  • Apply black rubber sealant along the perimeter of the mirror base. This will help to further secure your new mirror in place.

  • Place masking tape or duct tape around the mirror to hold it in place until the sealant dries.
