What is a Coolant Temperature Sensor?

A coolant temperature sensor is an electronic sensor in a motor vehicle that indicates the temperature of the coolant in the vehicle. A malfunctioning coolant sensor negatively impacts the function of a vehicle's engine.

Significance

  • A coolant sensor helps keep an engine functioning properly by indicating the current temperature of the coolant running through the engine.

Warning

  • If the temperature of coolant in a vehicle gets too high, overheating of the engine may result. If the coolant temperature sensor in a vehicle is malfunctioning, replace it immediately.

The Coolant Temperature Sensor Gauge

  • The coolant temperature sensor gauge is located on the instrument panel in most vehicles. If the indicator is in the blue, the engine is at a safe temperature. If the indicator on the gauge is in the red, the engine temperature is too high.

Considerations

  • Not all vehicles require the same amount of engine coolant. Make sure to read the owner's manual for your vehicle, before adding coolant or replacing the coolant temperature sensor.

Benefits

  • A properly functioning coolant temperature sensor helps to extend the life of your vehicle's engine.
