How to Disconnect a Battery in an Odyssey

Before performing any task relater to the electrical system of the Honda Odyssey, it is required that you first disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. For replacement of the battery you will need to disconnect both the positive and the negative battery cables. Since the battery is an integral part of the Odyssey's electrical system, and because of a significant risk of shock and damage to the system, careful attention should be paid to the proper procedure for disconnecting the battery.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire brush
  • Wrench, 10 mm
  • Lift the hood of the Honda Odyssey. Locate the battery on the right side of the engine, on the driver's side of the vehicle.

  • Remove the rubber battery terminal coverings on the battery. Lift the coverings from the terminals.

  • Clean the terminals with a wire brush. There may be debris or rust collected at the connection points of the battery cables and the terminals.

  • Place the 10 mm wrench around the bolt on the negative battery cable clamp. The negative terminal will be labeled "NEG" and is covered by the black terminal covering. Loosen the bolt by rotating the wrench counter-clockwise until the clamp is loose enough to be removed from the negative battery lead post.

  • Place the wrench onto the bolt of the positive battery cable clamp. Loosen the bolt until the clamp is able to be removed.

  • Remove the negative battery cable (or grounding cable), and then the positive cable.
