Prius Care & Maintenance

Keeping a car in good shape is a wise decision. For starters, maintaining a car properly usually gets top dollar if it is up for sale. Secondly, it improves the odds of having a smooth drive, with no surprising mechanical problems. Even though the Toyota Prius is a hybrid, the basic care of the car is as simple as caring for a non-hybrid vehicle. Service fees for the Prius are no higher than non-hybrid cars and can be performed at any dealership. The Prius is designed to have a service checkup every 5,000 miles

Routine Checkups

  • It is important to take the Prius in for this routine checkup, where the oil and air filters will be changed and the vehicle will be checked for leaks and other details involving the car's engine and performance. Doing these checkups at the dealer is ideal, because they keep a record and can monitor the car's optimal performance. If there is no nearby dealer, make sure the mechanic chosen is Toyota certified. This will ensure that everything done to the car stays under the manufacturer's warranty.

Another advantage of keeping up to date with the car's service schedule is that the fluids, such as antifreeze and motor oil, will be maintained at optimal level without the need to check them personally.

Fuel Consumption

  • While driving in the city, keep a steady pace and accelerate the car slowly after any stoplights, in order to economize on fuel consumption. The miles per gallon index can be monitored on the Prius' performance screen by pressing the Info button, then pressing the touch-screen button labeled "consumption."

When highway driving or on long road trips with mostly flat terrain, use the cruise control feature. Cruise control helps maintain a steady speed and helps save gasoline. For improving the gas mileage even more, keep the tires at the proper inflation.

Save the Brakes

  • When descending a mountain or a long grade, place the gearshift handle on "B," which will essentially control the Prius' speed without the need of the brake pedal control. This technique prevents breaks from overheating and extends their life.

Interior Maintenance

  • Wash the Prius, ideally with a "touchless" car wash system, at least once a month. Dust, pollution and salt, if living close to the ocean, eat away at the car's paint and the salt can eventually corrode the metal. Also keep the interior of the car clean by vacuuming the floor mats and the upholstery, to keep the car looking great. A detailing of the car is pricier than a simple car wash, but is a good way to wash all the seats and carpets, and wax the exterior for additional paint protection.
