How to Remove the Taillight Cover on a VW Golf

Removing the taillight cover on a VW Golf is not difficult. All you need is a flat-head screwdriver, 10 minutes and a well-lit place to work. Removing and replacing the taillight cover with an aftermarket cover will make your VW Golf unique to your own personality. There is no universal taillight cover to replace the stock one on your VW Golf; performance websites will have many styles of taillights to choose from.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Open the trunk of the VW Golf and locate the plastic panels that are covering the taillights. The panels are behind the taillights, inside the trunk.

  • Use the screwdriver to pull out the screw that is securing the panel to the trunk. This will expose the taillight housing. Use your hands to disconnect the two plastic tabs that are holding the taillight housing in place.

  • Pull the taillight housing away from the frame and toward the center of the trunk. Leave all the wires connected to the taillight housing.

  • Slide the screwdriver under the plastic lip on the taillight cover that is connecting the taillight cover to the metal frame of the VW Golf. There are four of these plastic lips.

  • Lift the taillight cover away from the vehicle.
