How to Replace a Lost Saab Key

Saab makes a number of vehicles. Losing your key to one of these cars is a serious and expensive problem because you’ll need to work with a dealership selling new Saab cars. However, once you find a dealer, you can easily replace a lost Saab key.

  • Decide what type of key requires replacement, as ignition keys and door keys are created in different ways. You’ll also want to pay attention to the age of your car. Older cars only need a key cut in the same shape as the original, while keys for newer cars have a microchip that will have to be programmed.

  • Make a list of all Saab and General Motors dealerships in your area and contact each one directly. Have the make and model of your car handy and let them know that you lost a key and need a replacement. Also specify exactly what type of key needs replacing.

  • Order your replacement key from the dealer. The dealer may require that you bring your vehicle into the shop or that one of their workers comes to your home. The dealership needs proof that you own the car, such as the title, which prevents them from making a key for someone trying to steal a car.

  • Ensure that the key works in your car. The dealership will craft a new key and program it to work for your Saab, but you still need to make sure that it works, preferably before you leave the lot. If the key doesn’t work, the dealer will need to program the key again.

  • Call an automotive locksmith if you’re looking for a less expensive way to replace your key. These locksmiths can make keys that work for doors and ignitions, but they often can’t make replacement keys if they contain a microchip.
