How to Install a New Battery in a Chevy Tahoe

A large SUV like a Chevy Tahoe requires a battery that is functioning properly and has plenty of cold cranking amps. A battery like this should be tested frequently and replaced when there are any signs of declining performance, so that you are not left stranded. Fortunately, installing a new battery in a Tahoe is not a difficult job; anyone who can use a wrench is capable of doing it.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet wrench with 6-inch extension
  • Socket set with flex heads
  • Wire brush
  • Rags
  • Open the hood and locate the battery, which is located at the front passenger side of the engine compartment on a Chevy Tahoe.

  • Note that the battery cables on a Tahoe are designed for batteries that have threaded side terminals. Select a flex socket that fits over the nut on the end of the red positive battery cable. Use the ratchet and socket to unscrew the cable from the battery terminal. Remove the negative battery cable from the battery in the same manner as the positive cable.

  • Locate the wedge-shaped plastic block at the bottom of the battery that secures it to the battery tray. Use the ratchet wrench and the extension to remove the nut and then the block. The battery can then be removed; take it out and set it aside for recycling and/or return for a core charge refund.

  • Clean the battery tray with a rag and set the new battery in place. Reattach the plastic block and tighten the nut down firmly. Brush off the threaded ends of the battery cables firmly with a wire brush. Then wipe it clean with a rag.

  • Attach the negative battery cable to the side terminal of the new battery first, using the ratchet wrench and socket again. Attach the positive battery cable in the same way.
