How to Maintain Power Steering Fluid Levels in a Honda Accord

The Honda Accord, a popular choice for a reliable family sedan, is also a good car for at-home basic maintenance. Keeping a regular schedule of fluid maintenance can prolong the life of your Honda Accord, and also helps prevent and troubleshoot leaks and other problems with the power steering system.

Things You'll Need

  • Honda power steering fluid
  • Check the power steering fluid in your Honda Accord when you check the other fluids, like coolant and transmission and brake fluids, every 30,000 miles. Check the fluid level sooner if you see fluid leaking from under the hood, hear noise coming from the steering system or suspect a leak.

  • Park the Honda Accord on a level surface and check the fluid level when the engine is cool. Warm fluid or an inclined surface can change the fluid level and result in an inaccurate reading.

  • Locate the power steering fluid reservoir in the engine department. The reservoir should be clearly labeled. Check the fluid level using the level marks on the outside of the reservoir.

  • Make sure that the fluid level is above the low level mark. Add fluid as necessary, but use caution and add fluid slowly to avoid filling above the maximum level mark.

  • Assess the hoses and connectors for loose parts or for any worn areas with breaks or cracks to prevent leaks. If you notice any worn parts, replace them immediately, as hot fluid leaks can result in severe damage to your vehicle.
