How to Change the Oil on 2008 Chevy Express 6.0 Liter

You are hard pressed to find vehicles that can carry up to 15 people. Depending on its configuration, your 2008 Chevrolet Express Van can carry two, eight, 12 or 15 people. Producing the power to pull all of that weight is a 6.0-liter V-8 that is rated at 323-horsepower, and like all engines, requires regular oil changes.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Metric sockets
  • Oil catch pan
  • Oil filter
  • 6 quarts 5W-30 conventional oil
  • Band-type oil filter wrench
  • With the engine warm, open the hood and remove the oil filler cap. Place the catch pan under the van centered below the oil filter. Loosen the oil filter in a counterclockwise rotation with the oil filter wrench until oil starts draining. Once the oil has slowed remove the oil filter. Inspect the oil filter mounting surface to make sure that the filter gasket is not stuck to it.

  • Install the new oil filter by hand until it makes contact with the engine. Tighten the oil filter one more full turn by hand. Position the catch pan under the oil drain plug. Remove the drain plug with a suitable socket and ratchet combination. Inspect the oil drain plug seal for damage and install a new one if it is damaged.

  • Thread the drain plug by hand into the oil pan to prevent cross-threading it. Tighten the drain plug to 18 foot-pounds with the torque wrench. Pour the 6 quarts of oil into the engine through the filler neck. Install the filler cap.

  • Start the engine and allow it to run for 30 seconds. Turn the engine off and wait a minute or two to allow the oil to drain into the crankcase. Check the engine oil and add as necessary to bring the level to the "Full" mark.
