How to Change the Oil on a 2007 Tahoe

Changing the oil on a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe is a basic maintenance procedure that should be performed on a regular schedule to ensure the continued performance capability of your vehicle. Changing the oil on a 2007 Tahoe is made easier by the vehicle's clearance. For many people, accessing the mechanical components underneath the Tahoe can be accomplished without the use of a jack or jack stand, simplifying the process slightly.

Things You'll Need

  • Drain pan
  • Crescent wrench or socket wrench
  • Strap wrench or oil-filter wrench
  • New oil filter
  • Funnel
  • 6 quarts of oil
  • Drive your Tahoe around your neighborhood for 10 or so minutes. The running time of the engine will warm up the oil inside the tank, making it more viscous. This will allow it to flow from the tank faster and more smoothly.

  • Locate the oil tank's drain plug under the Tahoe. The tank is located beneath the engine block, and the drain plug is identifiable as the lowest point on the bottom of the tank. It looks like a small nut sticking out of the tank.

  • Place a drain pan directly under the drain plug so the plug sits directly above the center point of the funnel on the side of the drain pan.

  • Remove the drain plug, letting the old oil drain from the tank into the drain pan.

  • Open the hood and access the dipstick and oil cap. Remove each to help the oil drain even faster.

  • Replace the oil drain plug and move the drain pan under the oil filter. The oil filter is a cylindrical component sticking out of the driver's side of the oil tank on your 2007 Tahoe.

  • Remove the oil filter with a strap wrench or oil-filter wrench. Oil will bubble from the filter as well as the point at which the filter was connected. Allow this oil to drain into the drain pan.

  • Wipe some new motor oil around the edges of a new oil filter and attach the new filter. The oil will create suction between the new filter and its connection point. Screw the filter on by hand, turning it one quarter turn past the point at which it stops screwing on smoothly.

  • Double check the connection of the oil drain plug and oil filter before filling the tank through the fill tube.

  • Place a funnel into the oil fill tube located on the top of the engine block and pour in about six quarts of replacement oil. The type of oil you use will depend on the condition of your Tahoe as well as what type of oil has been used in the Tahoe prior to this change. For example, if you have always used synthetic oil, you should use synthetic oil in this change. If your Tahoe has a lot of miles on it, you should use oil designed for high-mileage vehicles. Replace the dipstick and oil cap.
