How to Reset the Change Oil Light on a GMC Truck

One of the biggest problems vehicle owners face in performing their own oil changes is the fact that the oil change light remains on in the vehicle. This light can be quite annoying in your GMC truck and even become a distraction while driving. Luckily, getting this light to reset could be easier than you might think. This process requires only simple tools and about five minutes of time.

Things You'll Need

  • Crescent wrench
  • Park your truck in a flat area where the front of the vehicle is easily accessible.

  • Pop the hood and climb out of the truck. Lift the hood and secure it with the latch bar.

  • Remove the plastic caps from both terminals on the battery. These caps simply snap off.

  • Remove the mounting bolts on both the positive and negative battery terminals, using a crescent wrench. Slide the terminals off the battery posts.

  • Wait for several minutes, allowing the vehicle's electrical system to fully reset.

  • Reconnect the terminals to the battery posts and replace the mounting bolts.

  • Replace the plastic covers on the terminals and close the vehicle's hood. The "Change oil" light should be reset.
