You depend on your Toyota Tundra to carry heavy loads and drive through rough terrain. That's why it's important for proper maintenance of the truck, including changing the oil regularly. Changing the oil in a Toyota Tundra requires a car jack, jack stands and a closed end wrench.
Lift your Toyota Tundra with a car jack and place jack stands underneath it. If you don't have jack stands, use a pair of tire ramps. Make sure you use a brace on the backs of the front wheels, so the truck won't roll.
Pop the hood and locate the oil filler cap and dipstick. These components are in the center on either side of the engine. The dipstick has a bright, yellow handle. Remove both components and set aside.
Slide under your Tundra and see if your truck has a skid plate. This is a long piece of metal that protects your truck from rocks and debris. Remove the skid plate, if your oil components are underneath.
Assemble an oil drip pan, a closed end wrench, cleaning cloths and a new oil filter. Slide under your truck and locate the drain plug and oil filter. A Toyota Tundra drain plug is on the bottom rear of oil pan, with the filter on the side.
Loosen the oil drain plug using a closed end wrench. Apply pressure to the drain plug as you loosen, so oil won't leak. Remove the plug quickly and drain the oil into the drip pan for approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
Clean off excess oil and replace the drain plug. Locate the filter and using either a banded filter wrench or a closed end wrench, remove it. Pour the oil from the filter into the drip pan and dispose of the filter in a plastic bag.
Inspect the threads and check that the rubber gasket isn't stuck to the engine block. If it's stuck, remove it. Coat the gasket with a bit of oil and replace the filter.
Slide out and replace the oil in your Toyota Tundra. Use an oil with a viscosity of 5W-30 for cold temperatures, and 10W-30 for hot temperatures. For Tundra models dated before 1999, use oil type SH. After 1999, use oil type SJ.
Replace the dipstick and close the oil filler. Start the Tundra and let it run for about a minute. Check the dipstick. If it's not at the full line, turn off the engine and add a little more oil.
Lower your car and close the hood.
