How to Lower the Spare on the 2001 Chevy Silverado

Lowering the spare on a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado is a simple task that takes a matter of minutes. The spare tire on this American-made vehicle is under the bed. This model uses a ratcheting system that you engage with a tool from the back of the vehicle, meaning you shouldn't have to crawl under the bed to lower the spare.

Things You'll Need

  • Wheel wrench
  • Jack handle extensions
  • Retrieve the tools stored with the jack from under the passenger seat in the cab of the truck.

  • Connect the two jack handle extensions. Insert the open end, or hoist end, through the access near the license plate in the rear bumper.

  • Push the end of the extension securely onto the hoist shaft.

  • Place the square hole in the wheel wrench onto the end of the extension.

  • Grip the wheel wrench and turn the extension counterclockwise, continuing until the spare tire reaches the ground. Pull the tire from under the truck.
