How to Improve Towncar Mileage

The Lincoln Town Car offers luxury and performance for a price. The vehicle carries a large price tag but delivers an exceptional product. Maintenance and fuel costs remain high as well. Heavier vehicles use more gas to power the engines. Improving on fuel mileage to save money or improve the quality of the engine requires proper maintenance on the vehicle, improving the intake, and increasing the spark and performance of the engine. These small steps result in almost immediate savings on fuel costs.

Things You'll Need

  • K&N Air Filter or equivalent
  • quad-head platinum or iridium plugs
  • synthetic oils
  • Tune up your vehicle. A good tune-up helps to keep the engine performing at optimum levels. In addition to the standard tune-up, make sure you clean your injectors or have them cleaned professionally and that you replace any old or worn spark plug wires.

  • Upgrade your existing spark plugs. With the Town Car's eight-cylinder engine, upgrading your plugs to a quad-head platinum or iridium plug decreases misfire and improves performance by up to 10 percent. Several parts manufacturers produce platinum or iridium plugs designed for this purpose.

  • Replace your existing air filter with a dry or oiled lifetime air filter. The most popular version is the K&N Air Filter. K&N uses an oiled air filter to reduce the amount of material between your engine and the air it needs allowing more air to get through. Dry versions of the oiled air filter operate similarily but without the need for annual oiling.

  • Replace your intake housing with a cold air intake. After-market options allow for a cold air intake to be installed which places the air filter in direct line with the air flow into the engine. The direct line of air forces air into the intake which allows the engine to operate with less fuel.

  • Replace your oil and other liquids with synthetic variations. Synthetics hold to the metal better decreasing the wear and tear on the internal parts of your engine.
