How to Replace a 2000 Ford Mustang Fuel Filter

The fuel filter on the 2000 Ford Mustang is an essential part of the fuel cleaning process. The fuel leaves the gas tank and goes into the Intake tube of the fuel filter. The filter cleans sediments from the fuel as it flows toward the engine. Once a fuel filter becomes clogged, it can cause the Mustang to not crank at all. You can replace the fuel filter on the 2000 Ford Mustang yourself in about half an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • 5/16-inch fuel line disconnect tool
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Fuel filter
  • Small catch pan
  • Unscrew the gas cap from the gas tank.

  • Locate the fuel filter directly behind the gas tank. You can get to the fuel filter from the rear of the car.

  • Put a small catch pan or container under the fuel filter to catch any excess fuel.

  • Slide the 5/16-inch fuel line disconnect tool inside of the fuel line. You can purchase a 5/16 fuel line disconnect tool at any auto parts store. Once you slide the tool in, the end of the tool will release the ball bearings that hold the fuel line to the the fuel filter. Do this to both fuel lines.

  • Unscrew the band clamp that holds the fuel filter in place with a flat head screwdriver. Pull the band clamp down and remove the fuel filter.

  • Put the new fuel filter in place. Make sure that the flow arrow on the fuel filter points away from the gas tank. Pull the band clamp back up and screw the band clamp together tightly over the fuel filter to hold it in place.

  • Push the fuel lines straight onto the "inlet" and "outlet" tubes of the fuel filter until you feel the fuel lines lock in place. Then gently pull back on the fuel lines to make sure that the lines are securely attached to the fuel filter tubes.

  • Screw the gas cap back on the gas tank.

  • Turn the ignition on and off three times to prime the fuel filter. Then crank the engine.

  • Inspect the fuel filter and fuel lines for leaks while the engine is running. Turn the engine off.
