BMW Tuneup Information

BMWs are known not only for their luxury, but also their speed while maintaining and maximizing comfort. In order for BMWs to remain efficient modes of transportation, timely tuneups are required. Some people may feel they can perform their own tuneup, but it may be best to have a trained BMW mechanic to handle your maintenance because of the complicated nature of BMW engines. Regardless of the year of your BMW, the basic components are all the same when having a tuneup.

Ignition

  • In order for your BMW to turnover properly accelerate after idling, ignition parts may periodically need to be changed. The spark plugs are checked during every tuneup. Every 30,000 miles, spark plugs should be changed on a BMW, according to BMW mechanics. Spark plugs assist with speed and acceleration. Spark plug wires typically are not changed in the same interval as spark plugs as they have a replacement timeframe between 50,000 to 100,000 miles. Distributor caps and rotors are replaced when the spark plugs are changed. Oxygen sensors are changed during a tuneup because not only will a faulty oxygen sensor cause you to fail an emissions test, they can also compromise engine performance and limit fuel efficiency. BMW tuneups require parts that are of higher quality than cheaper products you may find somewhere else, which may reduce the overall quality of your BMW.

Filters

  • Oil filters help preserve your engine and also keep the engine oil clean. Oil changes should take place every 3,000 miles, but when performing a tuneup the maintenance technician will automatically check to determine if the oil filter needs to be changed. Air filters not only control the quality of the interior of your car but also keep the inner mechanics of the car clean. A PCV valve, fuel filter and transmission filter are also changed during a tuneup to extend the life of the transmission, and the fuel filter assists with preventing stalling and hard starting.

Radiator Hoses and Belts

  • Radiator hoses and belts are checked and replaced as well. During most maintenance visits, hoses and bills are often overlooked. Replacing them may or may not be included in the price of a tuneup. The fuel injectors are replaced every 100,000 miles. Your mechanic will also check this during a tuneup.

Where to Go for Service

  • Always go to a BMW dealer or mechanic that is specialized in not only servicing BMWs but also using authentic parts that are specialized for BMWs.

Costs

  • Depending on your location, you can pay as little as $100 for your tuneup and up to several hundred dollars. Costs are determined by going to your BMW dealer, the competition of BMW repair shops in your area and additional items that may need to be repaired.
