How to Replace Element Spark Plugs

Replacing the spark plugs on your Honda Element requires the removal of the cover on top of the engine to access the plugs. The Element has a dual-overhead-cam engine, and the spark plugs are nestled into the top of the cylinder head between the cams. Honda also used an integrated coil on each spark plug for these engines, so you must remove the coil from above each spark plug before you can remove the plug from the cylinder head. You can purchase new spark plugs for your Element at most auto-parts stores or at a Honda dealership.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket-wrench set
  • Spark-plug socket
  • Feeler gauge
  • Torque wrench
  • Locate the ignition-coil cover on top of the engine. Remove the two retaining bolts from the cover, using a socket wrench, then lift the cover off the engine.

  • Remove the retaining bolt from one of the coils under the cover. Unplug the electrical connector from the coil by depressing the locking tab on the connector, and pull the plug out of the coil.

  • Lift the coil out of the cylinder head, and set it aside. Using a spark-plug socket with an extension, remove each spark plug by turning it counterclockwise.

  • Using a feeler gauge, verify that the spark-plug gap on each new spark plug is within the manufacturer's specifications. Install the new spark plugs in the cylinder head.

  • Tighten the first spark plug until it is snug, then turn it a quarter of a turn more. Reinstall the coil over the spark plug, and install the retaining bolt. Torque the retaining bolt to 8 foot-pounds with a torque wrench.

  • Plug the wiring harness connector into the coil, making sure the connector locks into place. Repeat the process for the other three spark plugs.

  • Reinstall the coil cover on top of the engine. Reinstall the retaining bolts and nuts, and tighten them with the socket wrench.
