How to Clean GM Fuel Injectors

For a fuel injector to work properly, it needs to be able to turn the liquid fuel into an atomized vapor. Several inventors tried improving the process with limited results, but finally in 1982, the Bosch company created a workable format and introduced its design to the world. GM first introduced its version of fuel injection in 1985, called it Tuned Port Injection(TPI) and put it in several models, including the Corvette, Camaro and Trans Am.

Things You'll Need

  • Long screwdriver
  • Screw clamps
  • 10 feet of plastic fuel tubing
  • Fuel injector cleaning kit
  • Locate the fuel line where it enters the engine compartment of your GM vehicle and disconnect the line from the fuel injectors. Place one end of the plastic fuel tubing over the fuel inlet line and use the screw clamp to secure the tubing to the line with a screwdriver. Place the other end of the tubing into the gas tank.

  • Attach the end of the fuel injector cleaning kit to the inlet valve of the fuel injector port by screwing the hose bib of the kit onto the end of the fuel injector port. Verify that the cleaning kit hose is attached securely.

  • Take the cap off of the gas tank to keep the tank from being damaged by the high pressure created from the cleaning kit. Turn the ignition key to verify that fuel is not getting to the fuel injectors.

  • Check the owner's manual for your vehicle to determine what the maximum pressure reading should be for cleaning out your fuel injectors. Turn the valve on the fuel injector kit until the pressure reading reaches the maximum limit.

  • Turn the ignition key to start the engine and run the cleaning solution through the fuel injectors. Allow the engine to run for about five to 10 minutes and then turn the engine off.

  • Disconnect the cleaning kit hose from the fuel injector port and then remove the fuel line from the gas tank. Reconnect the vehicle fuel line to the inlet port of the fuel injectors and start the vehicle to test the results.
