Many 4x4s started receiving plastic headlights in the ’80s. Over time the plastic lights just didn’t live up to their glass predecessors. They allowed OEMs to build more unusual and aerodynamic grilles and light assemblies. They were better at projecting light than the basic round or square bulbs previously available. Unfortunately, the plastic faded out over time, reducing light projection and looking miserable to boot.

We tried out a Sylvania Headlight Restoration Kit to see if we could bring old lights back into the bright. The results were enlightening.

Various grit sandpapers, from 400 to 2,000, are used to get a smooth, even finish. A clarifying compound is also used. The new lights do look clearer in the daylight, and nighttime output is definitely better. The kit includes Sylvania’s UV blocker to reduce future hazing so the clear view should last through plenty more night runs.
