Mud Tire Shootout Fifth Place: Yokohama Geolandar M/T - Four Wheeler Magazine

The Geolandar M/T has been around for an eternity, yet we rarely see them out on the trail. We suspect the dated tread pattern will undergo a refreshening in the years to come, but don't let that sway your decision to try a set on your 4x4. Throughout our testing, the Geolandar returned better-than-average results. The pattern consists of cascading horizontal blocks arranged to create an arrow; the pattern is symmetrical on both sides and features a stepped-block circumferential groove down the middle. This helps the pattern maintain lateral stability while also acting as a channel to discharge water in the wet. With an average Shore A hardness of 69, the tread isn't the softest of the bunch, but thanks to twin-cut grooves that interrupt tread blocks perpendicular to the directional pattern, flexibility is not a problem. To enhance the construction of the six-ply carcass, two jointless nylon edge caps finish the perimeter of each of the two steel plies. A trio of polyester body plies cushion vibrations and help transfer heat away from the steel, out towards the sidewalls, allowing the carcass to run cooler in hot climates. On pavement, the Geolandars returned crisp, precise steering and came in at just under 72 decibels throughout our test loop. When aired down to 10 psi, the Geolandar's footprint was rectangular in shape, providing 109.25-square inches of contact patch. We found that they worked well in all but the deepest of mud. Truck Hill was no problem, but our rutted S-turn trail challenged the pattern and required three attempts before we made it to the top. Made in Japan, the Geolandar M/T is available in sizes ranging from 29.5 to 40 inches, and each features a 30-day trial satisfaction guarantee.

The Bottom Line
