The term "fuel stabilizer" can refer to more than one thing. One type is advertised as a device that gives car owners better gas mileage; the other is a fuel additive that prevents corrosion, according to Cartech Auto Parts.
The fuel device is designed to be installed in the fuel line of the vehicle. Manufacturers claim these products not only reduce consumption of fuel, but also harmful exhaust emissions. Research done by the Environmental Protection Agency has not substantiated such claims.
Fuel stabilizer additives prevent deposits from forming and clogging the fuel injectors. These legitimate fuel stabilizers are recommended for vehicle owners storing their cars for several months or more.
Gasoline breaks down. If a car owner does not wish to drain the gas tank before storing the car, adding an appropriate fuel stabilizer can protect the engine. Gas also evaporates from the tank. While this prevents moisture from entering the tank, heavier ingredients in the fuel that remain can make starting the engine difficult.
