Modern Subframe Installation Part 2 - How To - Hot Rod Magazine

Graft A Modern Subframe Onto An Outdated Frame, Part II

In the previous story, we laid the ground work for grafting a second-generation F-body subframe from Memory Lane Collector Car Dismantler onto an early chassis (Click Here To View Part I). The second-generation F-body subframe will add modern independent front suspension, a front sway bar, disc brakes and an improved engine-and-transmission mount system to cars that originally had straight-axles or early independent front suspension. Additionally, steering boxes interchange from ’70-’92 Camaros and Firebirds, so quick-ratio power steering with a positive feel can be added. The swap also gives you the ability to lower the vehicle and still retain full front suspension travel by installing the subframe higher in your old chassis.

As we pointed out last time, measuring and proper placement are critical, and we continue this month with more measuring. Although the complete installation of a subframe such as this requires special tools and skills, if you really want to enjoy driving your classic car or truck, the effort can make the difference between fun and fiasco.
