COBRA Daytona Sport Seat Install

Tires, Brakes, and Seats. Arguably the three most important elements of any car built for performance. Heck, even cars like Roel's cereal-box-stock EK Coupe need the triad to conquer the streets of the LBC. If you've been keeping up with our Project DAssassin, you noticed that we already have some chewier-than-nougat Yokohama AVS ES100's. For stopping power, Wilwood brakes provide the reins for our black stallion. However, we're missing some good seats. We're tired of our fat asses sliding over the flat side bolsters in hard turns on Mulholland Drive. The only good thing about the OEM seats is that they recline. Other than that, they aren't up to par with what we have in mind for the DA. The guys here hate when it comes time for me to make a decision. They say I take to long. They say I have ADD. They say I can never make up my mind. You know what? They are all right. Cognitive Dissonance is a bitch.

Three weeks (ok, more like three months), I finally found seats that would meet all of the following criteria:

1. They had to be comfortable for daily driving

2. They had to come with leather wear patches in the key areas (see pictures above).

3. They had to recline

Obviously, they also had to offer us super support when driving our DA at full tilt. In keeping with our Trifecta Theorem, our decision should be an easy one, right? Yeah! One quick call to Sube Sports is all it took. Luckily, we're in Southern California, so we just skated down the 405 freeway (or highway) to take a look at what they offered.

After spending an hour discussing our criteria for seats with Andreas Cardini, he uttered three words: Cobra Daytona Sport. The Cobra Daytona Sports offer us all the things we wanted in our seats, and feature some of the thickest and most durable fabric we've seen yet.

Batting for the seating cycle is tough, but the Daytona Sports came to the plate with a bat of Louisville Slugger-specs. The reclining mechanism really impressed us. It's a full-blooded Recaro unit, and one turn of the knob is all it takes to adjust the reclining position in what seemed like one-degree increments. But wait, there's more! When you tilt the seat forward for your backseat passenger(s), the seat returns to its original position! Brilliant! The seats also feature reclining adjustment knobs on BOTH sides of the seat. How is this important? Well, we all know that you don't take your girl with you to work or school every day. More often than not, you're dippin' solo. The dual-knobs allow you to rotate the seats so that when the driver seat starts to wear a bit, you can put it in the passenger side and have a fresher fart-free seat! Ambidextrous seats. Brilliant!

After we installed the seats, we banged our heads on our VIS Carbon Hood repeatedly. Tourette's Syndrome? No. If you are familiar with 90-93 Integras, the thought of getting into one of the two front seats will send your blood pressure skyrocketing. Between 1989 and 1993, Honda decided to employ automatic, motorized shoulder harnesses in the DA. Even worse, the seatbelts were attached to the stock seats! There's really no way to use them with aftermarket seats.

We had two options. We could either hunt for the Canadian Domestic Market belts which aren't automatic, or we could break down and purchase some 4-point harnesses. No big deal, Sube Sports had us covered. They served us up a pair of Schroth Rallye 4 harness belts. These belts are made in Germany, and feature a D.O.T.-approved buckle which would allow us to use them on the streets of L.A. When ordering, it's important to note that there is a driver version and separate passenger version. There's a reason for that. The harnesses, like the seats, are ultra premium quality. You can't buy a better harness for the street. In fact, in Germany, BMW offers their customers the option of factory-installed Schroth belts! Take that, Takata!

Enough talk. Click on Page 2 to check out the step-by-step installation of this British & German tag-team.
