As we all know, choosing the correct tire for your application and style of driving is one of the most important aspects of dialing in any car’s overall feel. Since these seemingly low-tech donuts are the only things connecting the car to the road (ideally), finding a balance between performance, treadwear, wet performance, and fuel economy can be tough. But fret not, BFGoodrich has recently introduced a tire that fills all the needs for those looking for a great street tire in the form of its new g-Force Sport COMP-2.

Because BFG is so adamant about the COMP-2 being a true all-around performer, the company was kind enough to set us up with a series of controlled tests and comparisons. First up was a dry autocross at the infield road course of AAA Speedway in a few vehicles equipped with the COMP-2. Competing tires were also presented on each vehicle for fair comparison’s sake. At high speeds in the Subaru Impreza WRX STI, the COMP-2 proves stable and confidence inspiring. We didn’t have enough time to really put the tires through their paces, but the first impression was a marked improvement over the other tires that were available for testing. Part of the reason the COMP-2 feels so composed in high-speed cornering situations is the g-Force Sport tread design: specially engineered “g-Hooks” provide a sort of biting edge to help achieve grip at any angle of contact.

For those who live in wetter climates, don’t worry, the COMP-2 is quite good in the wet as well as dry, as we experienced next on the wet autocross course. For this portion of the testing, we drove a newest-generation Golf GTI, and when we say the course was “wet,” we mean the track was covered with a thin layer of water. With this much water, a small amount of hydroplaning and general skittishness is expected from any tire, but the COMP-2 held its own against the competition. According to BFG, it’s the specially redesigned silica-infused compound that delivers high levels of grip and crisp response in both wet and dry conditions, and we are happy to report that this proved to be true in real-world testing.

At the end of the day, we finished up with a 0–60–0 acceleration and braking test. Behind the wheel of the massive Dodge Challenger, the COMP-2 was composed and predictable, tracking in a straight line with great bite. Our numbers were faster and more consistent with the COMP-2 than with the competition because the tire’s construction (as well as the compound itself) is designed to place performance higher on the priority list than anything else.

BFG says its will enter the market with 82 percent coverage, with more sizes available soon. If you’re looking for a solid, all-around performance tire that’s good in both wet and dry conditions, this might be the right choice for you. Always remember that summer UHP tires are not designed for use in snow and icy conditions, so if you live in an area where the climate gets chilly, please use your brain and get a set of dedicated winter tires for the cold months.
