There's no mystery. When it comes to wheels and Euros, mesh (or cross-spoke) designs are favored around the world. Talk to most wheel manufacturers and mesh wheels account for more than half their sales. There's something about the classic design with its motorsport appeal that draws us to them, whether we're building street, race or show cars.

The wheel manufacturer that made mesh popular is none other than BBS. The company was founded 40 years ago in 1970. Two years later, BBS manufactured its first three-piece mesh race wheel to help race teams looking for custom sizes. The design became widely adopted in the motorsport scene, finding its way into everything from Formula One to DTM.

After its racing success, the road wheels were born - most notably the BBS RS in '83. The wheel became a global hit and derivatives of the famous design have continued to be built for OEs and the Euro community such as the LM, RX and RC. There's even talk of BBS building the classic RS again, such is the demand.

While BBS became a household name, many other companies have put their own twist on the mesh wheel, creating a plethora of options for enthusiasts to choose from. There are literally hundreds of designs, as well as options such as construction, lip depth, face color, bolt color, etc.
