There are a lot of choices out there in the performance diesel market for upgraded intake and exhaust systems, so it pays to educate yourself a little on how the various systems are designed and how each one goes together. Volant Cool Air Intakes are unique for some pretty important reasons. First, and foremost, the Volant system eliminates any chance of hot air from contaminating the intake charge to the engine. Volant does this by sealing a conical, high-flow air filter in a box that has more air volume than the factory unit.

In order to balance the gain made on the intake side, Volant is also now offering its own line of exhaust systems. The new 4-inch system installed on this truck features 304 stainless steel construction-the whole system, not just the tips like some companies do-and is mandrel-bent for the best possible flow and a smooth look. The muffler is insulated for a throaty sound but also to eliminate that annoying highway drone effect some aftermarket kits have. A dual-wall chrome tip helps decrease the discoloration caused by burnt gases and heat, plus the tip is welded to the pipe to eliminate bulky clamps. The exhaust is designed to be a side-swept system, so if you tow you won't be getting fumes on your precious cargo.

We visited the Volant Performance facility to take a closer look at the kind of product the company is putting out in the market and followed along as the crew installed both an intake and an exhaust system on an '05 Dodge Ram 2500HD with a Cummins HO diesel. With both the intake and exhaust systems coming from the same engineers, we expected that to be a knockout combination that would truly help the truck.
