Miller’s Spectrum 375 X-TREME Plasma Cutter - Tool Of The Month

Superman is a stud because he can fly, is impervious to typical Earthly pain, and is, well, super-strong. Batman has the coolest gadgets and a vengeance streak like nobody’s business. And then there’s Wolverine, who has Adamantium providing his skeletal structure, accelerated healing -- and who can forget those three blades popping out of his knuckles? Point is, superheroes are cool. As boys, many of us imagined having superpowers, and then we grow up and deal with the not-so-super daily 9 to 5 grind. Miller Welders, however, does provide hope for all of us who fabricate on our trucks, cut thick metal, or simply want the baddest metal-cutting tool out there. The new Spectrum 375 X-TREME with XT30 torch is like having a superpower in the palm of your hand. Need to cut out a C-notch for your airbagged suspension? Please, that’s child’s play with the Spectrum 375. How about cutting 3/8-inch-steel sheet stock for heavy-duty brackets? It only takes a few seconds holding the XT30 torch. Perhaps the best part of the new Spectrum 375 X-TREME is its Auto-Line circuitry, which allows it to automatically connect to 120-240 VAC power. In other words, if your home garage only has 120V, no worries, you can still use the Spectrum 375 and cut up to 3/8 inch, but if your shop is wired for 240V, the Miller plasma cutter will up the amperage to 275A and slice through 3/8 inch of mild steel at a rate of 18 inches a minute. Keep in mind, the 3/8-inch cutting rating is what Miller calls “rated.” The Spectrum 375 X-TREME will easily cut ½-inch steel and will sever up to 5/8-inch steel, only not as cleanly as the thinner metals. It really is like having Cyclops’ high-energy beam shooting from his eyes, only you can control it with the finger-trigger found on the XT torch. Best of all, the 375 X-TREME works on both home and shop voltage, and it’s portable. Recently, we made some big mods to several project trucks’ frames, and the Spectrum 375 was invaluable in the shop. No more changing out cut-off-wheel blades or jagged cut lines using an air saw, we simply fired up the plasma cutter and quickly got to work. As always, safety was first and foremost before we cut anything. While handling the XT30 torch, we wore Miller’s multitask gloves and Miller’s blue frame smoked safety glasses. All that is needed to use the plasma is a constant 5 scfm of airflow from a compressor and the aforementioned voltage. Weighing in at just 19 pounds and thanks to the included shoulder strap, the Spectrum 375 is lightweight and completely portable. With the included X-CASE, the plasma cutter can be transported and stored easily and safely. The Spectrum 375 X-TREME isn’t cheap with an MSRP of $1,366.00, but just like a real superpower, with great power comes great responsibility. To keep our hands and eyes safe, we always wear Miller’s safety gloves and safety glasses.
