Installing a pump, lines, and a sump on Project Rust Bucket
With first-generation Dodges, any time the injection pump is turned up, the stock lift pump becomes woefully inadequate. If the truck is hot-rodded around with 0 psi of fuel pressure for long enough, the injection pump will seize and a costly repair bill will be the result. So what's the fix? Well, for a while, we had a Carter electric fuel pump spliced in on the stock supply line, but this was more of a Band-Aid fix than anything else. When we did more research, we found that the stock fuel pump, filter, and in-tank fuel pickup were all restrictions to fuel flow when making more than 400 hp at the wheels. Since we're eventually planning on installing a 14mm injection pump head and rotor, we decided to build our fuel system right this time and were able to upgrade absolutely everything for less than $800. Now our fuel system is good for 700 to 800 hp at the wheels, which is probably more than we'll make, but hey, it's better to have too much fuel than to have to do it all over again.
