Auto Insurance Claims: Proving an auto insurance claim was cancelled, auto insurance claim, subrogation

Question
I was an accident. I was at fault. We decided not to go through the insurance company. There was some confusion, apparently I wasnt dealing the owner of the vehicle just the person driving it. The owner filed a claim. He then told me he cancelled right away once he found out, we had an agreement worked out. How do I know for sure he cancelled the claim?

Answer
Outside of calling the insurance company directly (or contacting your own company to see if the other party's company has begun the subrogation to recover their costs), you are left relying on the other party's word. You could ask them to give you a statement in writing, and demand that they sign a release when you've paid for the damage repair and any other costs they may have.
