Auto Insurance Claims: Car Accident, spill the beans, specific company

Question
Hello, I was wondering if once i have filed a claim against someone that I had a very minor rearend collision with (there was only a very small scratch on my car, but my car is brand is brand new) if it would be possible to drop or cancel the claim. The other driver offered to pay me out of pocket because the damages were so little, and she is a student who doesn't want her insurance rates to skyrocket?

Answer
Samantha,

You can always drop a claim, and the insurance company will likely be more than happy to oblige.  Whether or not her insurance rates go up is another thing.  This will depend on underwriting guidelines at her specific company.  Once a claim is reported, it is reported, you know?  One can't un-spill the beans.  If one has very many claims, whether they pay out or not, then they become a higher risk and will most likely pay a higher premium.

Some companies offer accident forgiveness or may count the severity of the claim in their calculations for risk.  I would say that if you settle, get the agreement in writing for both your protection and the protection of the student, no matter how small the claim.

I hope this helps, and sorry for the delay!
