On my 97 Altima the drivers side window wont roll up and when I try to roll it up the motor just keeps making a grinding noise.Im wondering if the window its self is off track, Im asking this because at one point it went back up but at the half way point it seemed like it was jamming up, but when I pressed the down button it went down with no problem, but now it wont go back up and when I hit the button to make it go back up all it does is make a grinding noise. If the window is off track can you tell me how to get in there to place it back on the track.

Vicky,

It is the window regulator that is gone.  Buy one from rockauto.com if you can wait a couple of days or go to the dealer for the part.  It is not too difficult to replace.
Thank you for your answer. What I really need to know is the steps neccessary to take apart the door panel to my 97 Altima to get in there to put a new regulator in. Maybe you can reccommend a web site that has a diagram of the door panel on the drivers side and the step by step instructions to take it apart. This info would be a real lifesaver to me and save me tons of money doing it myself. Please let me know the insrtuctions for taking the drivers side door panel off as soon as possible. Thanks again...Vicky

Answer
Vicy,

You need a phillips screw driver and a putty knife.  You will need to remove the plastic plug where you pull the door closed and under it you will find a screw.  Then where the opener is there is a surround that has to be removed.  Now, you will have to gently pry the bottom of the door panel off using the putty knife to distribute the load as there are many clips that have to snap out.  Be careful as they will snap off if you are not careful.  Yours might have another screw at the top by the edge of the door.  So, as you take the door panel off look for blind places where another screw migth be.  Now, you will need to get the control cover off to unplug the wiring so the panel will come off.  It takes some time but with the help of someone you can do it.  Under the panel is a plastic cover that has to be pulled down to get access to the regulator.  Pull it down and there will be three ten millimeter bolts that hold the regulator in place.  Use gloves as the metal edges are sharp and have someone hold the glass while you remove the regulator or the glass fill fall to the bottom of the door track.
