Auto Insurance Claims: How it effects my insurance if friend crashes my car?, accident claim, increased rates

Question
Today I let my friend borrow my car for the evening. While out, she ran a red light and an oncoming vehicle hit the rear left door of my car. Nobody was injured, and it's my understanding that the other car underwent little to no damage.
I know that my insurance will be held accountable, but I've never been in an accident or gotten a ticket myself, and I'm just wondering if there is any way keep future insurance payments from sky-rocketing. (I'm in college, so it's already a little pricey because of my age.)

Any tips or options would be incredibly appreciated. Thank you so much for your time.

Answer
Unfortunately, this will probably affect your insurance rates.  Most insurance carriers use a point system in their underwriting process.  The problem with giving you a great answer is that each insurance company has its own underwriting guidelines.  It is possible that you may be allowed a couple of at fault accidents (like the accident forgiveness offered by some carriers), but it is also possible that one accident will get you a non-renewed policy when it comes up for renewal.

In general, most companies will use a dollar threshold and will not increase premiums or add points for one accident up to a certain dollar amount, usually something like $1500.00 to $3000.00 in severity.  The only way to find out how it affect you for sure is to call your insurance carrier and ask to speak with the underwriting manager / supervisor and directly ask them what their specific policy is.

I hope this helps.
