Auto Insurance Claims: A question pertaining to taxes/registration, tax assessors office, state dmv

Question
I would like to apologize in advance for asking a question that may not apply to your expertise, but I could not find an answer to it anywhere else.

I would like to buy a vehicle from someone, but it turns out they haven't been paying taxes on it for some time now.  My question is if I buy the vehicle, will I be stuck paying all of those back taxes or will they fall on the seller?  Is there anything I can do to exempt them if they fall on me?

Answer
Hi Brock,

Unfortunately, you are correct. This is not my area of expertise. But I will do my best to help.

Vehicle tax laws are different in each state. The best thing I can suggest would be for you to contact you county tax assessors office or your state DMV (which ever one handles vehicle taxes). They certainly would be the correct ones to provide you with a correct answer.

I hope this helps
