Auto Insurance Claims: Second vehicle coverage, vehicle coverage, san francisco bay area

Question
Hi Bennie. My question is about premiums rather than claims.
I currently have an 18 y.o. pickup which I just carry liability on. I am thinking about buying a new one which I would carry liability and around a $1000 deductible collision/comprehensive coverage. I was thinking on keeping
my current one as just a work and second vehicle. I asked my agent what the premiums would be for the two vehicles (1 driver household) and was surprised to hear it would be over double what I'm paying now. From around $500/yr to around $1200/yr. Does this sound even remotely reasonable? I
have a clean driving record, good credit, and only 1 driver on the policy. As I can only logically drive 1 vehicle at a time I would have expected maybe a $200-$300 premium increase. Your thoughts? Any alternatives? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Jim,
When there are more cars than drivers, most insurance companies do
give you a special discount on each extra vehicle.

With the addition of a new truck carrying comprehensive and collision
and only a premium increase of approximately $700 sounds very reasonable to me.

You should also discuss deductibles of $100 comprehensive and $500 collision.  The savings by carrying a $1,000 deductible for vehicles in the price range of your new truck are very minimal.

I hope that you find this information helpful.  Your feedback by rating my response will be appreciated.

Sincerely,
Bennie
