well, the tranny sometimes goes into reverse and sometimes it sounds like its trying to but wont engage. then it gets stuck in low gear some times if i turn the o/d on it'll work could it be the shift control sensor. or should i just replace the tranny altogether

Hi,
It is probably the shift control sensor.  You should get a repair manual from a discount auto parts store and do an ohm test.  The repair manual will explain how to do this test yourself.  If you take it to a transmission shop they most probably will replace it and charge you for a rebuild.
