Auto Insurance Claims: liability, hi mary, best bet

Question
I am thinking of putting a car in my 18 year old son's name and purchasing
liability insurance for him.  If he is in an accident and the liability exceeds his
coverage, can I be sued for what he doesn't have?  I have more assets than he
does and want to know if my assets would be at risk?

Answer
Hi Mary,
Good idea.  Since your son is now considered an adult, you are no longer responsible for his actions if the car and insurance is in his name, with one exception.  That exception being if he is acting as an agent for you.  Which could be your sending him on any specific errand such as grocery shopping or picking up the dry cleaning.

Be sure to keep him named as a driver on your policy, otherwise, if he needs to drive your car in an emergency, there will be ZERO
insurance coverage available.

Your best bet will probably be to insure your son with the same company that you are with and they can just cross reference the files.
There will be no extra charge for leaving your son as a driver on your policy as long as your company is aware of the company name and policy number of his coverage.

I hope that you find this information to be of help.  Your feedback by rating my response to your question will be appreciated.
