Auto Insurance Claims: auto insurance, insurance injury, car damages

Question
I am 18 years old and I am living at my moms house I am not insured through her car insurance policy, and i am not insured through my dads car insurance policy either. If i drive one of my dads cars which is insured by him would i be covered by his insurance while driving his car? Also suppose i had motorcycle insurance but this situation was the same would i then be covered while driving his car since i have motorcycle insurance?

Answer
Hello Sean,

Your motorcycle policy will not cover you in any vehicle accident anywhere. You need an auto policy for car accidents.

With that:

your living arrangement situation can bring your problems. You are likely to be covered by you mom's insurance driving her car (and maybe your dad's depending on what the policy says) because you are a member of her household (assuming your live there all the time).

Your dad's policy might cover you if you drive his car as long as you do not use this car regularly and drive it with permission. Basically a one time thing.

To be completely sure of coverage, you really need to be listed as a driver, other than that it will turn on a question of policy interpretation.

Good Luck
