Auto Insurance Claims: Liability Issues, motorcycle safety course, liability issue

Question
Basically I am 19, going to school full time, living with my parents and am
also under my parents health and auto insurance. I have become extremely
interested in buying a motorcycle, however my parents are saying that
should I wreck it, they could get sued for my actions. I am planning on
buying the motorcycle by myself, and my name will be the only one on the
title. I will also be paying for the insurance on the bike on my own. My
question is that should I crash it, can my parents be held legally liable for my
actions?

Thanks

Answer
Hi Jared,

Since you are 19 you are legally an adult. Your parents would not be liable for actions of yours if you are on a motorcycle that is only in your name and insured only in your name.

However, it sounds more like your parents are concerned for your safety and are using the liability issue as a way to keep you safe. Motorcycles are dangerous. You are young and inexperienced even at driving a car let alone a motorcycle. You may want to respect your parents by waiting a couple of years before getting a motorcycle.

If you do decide to buy a motorcycle you may consider taking a motorcycle safety course. This may help with some of your parents fears.

I hope this helps
