Auto Insurance Claims: no-fault, time megan, renewal time

Question
i was recently involved in an auto accident, presumed to be a "no-fault".  to my knowledge, no one received any tickets, including myself, but we have yet to hear any information on  who's fault the accident actually is.  what is the typical insurance premium increase if this is by chance a "no-fault" accident? thank you so much for your time!

Answer
Hi Megan,

Regardless of what you may have been told, there is no such thing as a "no-fault" accident. An accident results when someone does something they should not have or does not do something they should have. Being at fault does not always result in someone receiving a ticket. When you receive a ticket it means that based on what the police officer heard and saw he/she was able to determine that one of the drivers violated a specific law. When they can not determine if a law was broken they do not issue a ticket but that does not mean that someone was not negligent. Between the two insurance companies they will determine if you or the other driver was at fault. The may even determine that you were each some percentage at fault such as 50/50.

If you are determined to be any percentage at fault, it will be considered to be an at-fault event which will likely increase your premium at renewal time. Each insurance company has its own guidelines to determine how much the premium will increase, but generally will be between 15% to 40%. You would need yo call your agent that sold you the policy to determine the increase in your specific situation.

I hope this helps
